Bitcoin (BTC) is a decentralized digital asset and peer-to-peer payment network introduced in 2009 through the Bitcoin protocol. It enables users to transfer value directly over a global network without relying on a central bank or traditional financial intermediary. Transactions are recorded on a public blockchain, where participating nodes independently verify transactions and maintain a shared record of ownership and transfers. Bitcoin uses a Proof-of-Work consensus mechanism to secure its network and confirm new blocks. Miners compete to produce valid blocks by performing computational work, while network participants independently verify the resulting blocks according to Bitcoin's consensus rules. Once confirmed, transactions become part of the blockchain's permanent transaction history, providing a transparent and verifiable record of activity. Bitcoin's monetary policy is defined by its protocol, with a maximum supply of 21 million BTC. New BTC enters circulation through block rewards paid to miners, and the issuance rate decreases through scheduled halving events. This predetermined supply structure distinguishes Bitcoin from traditional currencies whose supply can be influenced by monetary authorities. BTC can be transferred between compatible wallets and used for peer-to-peer payments, international value transfers, and digital asset transactions. Its open network, limited supply, and decentralized architecture have also contributed to its role as a widely recognized digital asset within the global financial and cryptocurrency markets.
